Innovative Engineering for Maximum Reliability

The old generators were carefully removed using a small HIAB vehicle, ensuring zero disruption to critical operations. The new units were positioned over a bunded area to prevent leaks, reflecting a commitment to environmental protection.

To meet ultra-long runtime needs, the generators were equipped with:

• An advanced oil make-up system — featuring a large storage tank and additional filters, extending service intervals to a remarkable 2,000 running hours.
• Deutz oil/air-cooled engines — chosen for their legendary reliability and minimal maintenance requirements.

The control system was strategically configured to ensure continuous power. By alternating runtime between the two sets, operational hours were evenly shared, preventing excessive wear on any single unit. In the event of a failure, seamless backup would ensure uninterrupted function at critical moments.

Navigating Complex Urban Constraints

The installation site was positioned behind a row of retail units on one of London’s busiest high streets. With no direct access for conventional delivery methods and roadclosure permits unavailable at short notice, traditional offloading was impractical. Additionally, the narrow passageway leading to the final installation location required an exceptional degree of precision handling.

A Turnkey Solution That Met the Highest Specifications

HG Projects partnered closely with ISG Construction to deliver a turnkey solution that met the highest specifications. The installation featured three powerful 1000kVA MTU standby generators, each enclosed in bespoke acoustic canopies with a special colour finish, ensuring they blended harmoniously with the leafy business park surroundings.

To ensure long-term reliability and efficiency, the setup included COMAP control systems for mains synchronisation and BMS integration, along with a high-capacity 20,000-litre diesel storage tank equipped with an automatic fuel polishing rig to maintain optimal performance.

Reinforced Stability to Accommodate the Raised Flooring System

HG Projects developed a tailored approach to distribute the weight safely while maintaining full accessibility. Custom-made metal frames were designed and installed beneath the raised floor, spreading the load evenly so that the raised floor remained stable and efficient in the long term. 

We added an external switch that lets the two UPS units work together. This means maintenance can be done on one unit without stopping the power, keeping everything running smoothly all the time.

Precision Engineering and Smart Installation

HG Projects designed a power system tailored to each site’s limitations. In Southall, a reinforced concrete pad with enclosed fencing was built and the generator was lifted into position using a HIAB crane. Over in Dorking, we installed the generator on sloping ground, which required custom-made feet of varying heights to get a perfectly level setup.

We also installed special switches during a short planned shutdown. These switches help the UPS systems work together without any power interruptions. With the UPS units positioned and batteries configured, a full mains failure test was conducted to guarantee uninterrupted performance. These functions could be monitored remotely via a 3G SIM system, providing real-time status updates to CareUK for proactive power management.

 

Smart, Bespoke Design for Maximum Efficiency

HG Projects engineered a tailored fuel storage solution, installing two high-capacity bunded tanks to provide fuel for each standby generator.

• One 10,000-litre tank dedicated to a 1000kVA Perkins generator.
• One 18,000-litre tank servicing a 1600kVA Cummins generator.

Both tanks had advanced monitoring and safety features, including Ocio level gauges with BMS integration, overfill protection devices, bund alarms and double-skinned fuel connections for reliability.

Due to its proximity to an adjacent building, a fire-rated barrier was installed near the 10,000-litre tank to ensure our installation complied with regulations.

A Quiet but Powerful Solution

The custom-built generator met the strict noise limits and exceeded what the client expected. The entire design, assembly, and testing process finished on time. After installation, commissioning and G99 testing were completed, ensuring the power supply for critical ambulance operations stayed uninterrupted.

Thanks to careful planning and expert engineering, the South East Coast Ambulance Service now has a dependable, ultra-quiet backup power system that keeps emergency services running smoothly without any disruption.
